BOGGSVILLE ANNOUNCES VOICES OF THE PASSED CEMETERY TOUR
The Voices of the Passed Cemetery Tour returns to Boggsville Friday, May 23rd, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Come enjoy the fun. Take a horse-drawn wagon ride. Come face to face with the heroes and scoundrels of our past and hear the stories of our ghostly residents.
You’ll meet John Prowers, one of the founders of Boggsville who came to the area working as a teamster for the Bent brothers and was fascinated by the rich tapestry of life at the edge of the frontier. He married Amache Ochinee, daughter of an influential Cheyenne chief. Before Boggsville, they ran a stage coach station near Caddoa and started the first cattle operation in the area. He is credited with introducing Hereford cattle to Colorado.
Kit Carson will make an appearance. The famed frontiersman spent the last years of his life at Boggsville. He died at Fort Lyon about a month after his wife had died in childbirth. Both were initially buried at Boggsville and the Boggs family raised their minor children.
You will also meet Las Animas native, Ambassador Llewellyn Thompson, namesake of Highway 50, who served under six presidents and was influential during the Cold War and Cuban Missel Crisis. The ghost of Judge Leroy Campbell, who in his youth was a member of Robert E. Lee’s bodyguard, will appear along with Union cavalry soldier, Luis Gardea. You will even enjoy a performance by the Kitchen Klutter Band whos members entertained up and down the valley for over 64 years.
The cemetery tour is Boggsville’s spring fundraiser and all proceeds support the preservation of the Boggsville Historic Site. Adults are $10, Youth under 16 are $5 and children under 6 are free. Wagons load every 30 minutes at Boggsville and each tour takes approximately one hour. Enjoy refreshments and tour the historic Boggsville homes while you wait. Reservations are not necessary but larger groups are encouraged to do so to ensure you are all seated in the same wagon. You can make reservations by calling 303-427-2317.
If you haven’t been to Boggsville lately, you’ll be amazed at the recent preservation progress that is underway. Come out and have some fun while learning about our early Bent County residents. The Boggsville Historic Site is located at 28120 Colorado Highway 101 in Las Animas, Colorado. That is about 2 miles south of the courthouse on Hwy 101. See you Friday, May 23rd!
