Obituary
Jessie Leroy Wauson, 90, known to most as “Roy”, went to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 24, 2025 at Bluestem Village in La Junta, Colorado. Jessie lived a life for Jesus being a member and Deacon of the Church of Revelation (formerly Hands of God Ministries). Jessie was born in Amarillo, Texas to Ollie and Tina (Ballard) Wauson on January 18, 1935. He met the love of his life, Faye Maggart, in Amarillo, Texas and they were married on December 26, 1953, in Clovis, New Mexico and moved to La Junta where they lived for 57 years together. Out of this union, they had three children, Roy, Patsy and Teddy.
Jessie helped rebuild the Santa Fe train depot in the 50’s and was Scout Master in the 60's at Columbian School, which he loved. He worked in the grocery store business for many years starting at Chets Sello, where he was assistant manager. He later helped start up the Quickee Food store chain both in Las Animas and La Junta. He eventually built a convenience store in Ordway, R/F Foods, and was owner/manager for close to 20 years. He had a very generous heart, helping out many people all through his life. He loved his church and helped with the monthly food drive for many years, up until he was almost 90 years old. Back in the 70’s & 80’s, he was on the Sheriff’s Posse and would tell occasional stories leaving you in suspense. He became a lieutenant during that time. Jessie had a big sense of humor joking around with everyone.
Jessie enjoyed working with wood and fishing. Jessie’s biggest delight was his grandkids. He loved his family and enjoyed many outings, picnics, and holiday dinners. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his children Roy and Pat Wauson both of La Junta; grandchildren, Kristi Wauson (Frank Condit), Robert (Lea) Penrod, Jr., Jason (Geneva) Wauson all of La Junta; Anna (Travis) Schwindt of Rocky Ford; Katie (Jordan) York of Olney Springs; Justin Wauson of La Junta; great-grandchildren, Nic (Alicia) Wauson of Walsenburg; Curtis (Kayla) Penrod of La Junta; Robbi Penrod of La Junta; Dameon (Chevelle) Camacho-Wauson, and Justyna (Damian) Camacho-Wauson, both of Avondale; six great great-grandchildren; and his dogs, Buddy and Peanut. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Faye, and his youngest son, Teddy.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 3-5 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel in La Junta. Celebration of Life service Friday, May 30, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Revelation Church, 10th and Adams in La Junta with Pastor Jack Fuller officiating.
