Rocky Ford Elks Lodge Welcomes Striking New Elk Statues, Thanks to Dedicated Members Larry and Jane Herrera

ROCKY FORD, CO – The Rocky Ford Elks Lodge #1147 has a bold new look, thanks to longtime Elks members Larry and Jane Herrera, who brought home two impressive nearly 10-foot elk statues from Texas. The statues, each weighing almost 400 pounds and crafted in Mexico, now stand proudly in front of the lodge’s 112-year-old building, offering a striking symbol of the organization’s legacy and values.

The Herreras discovered the statues during a trip to Lampasas, Texas—over 750 miles away. “We went to breakfast and saw the elk at a store. I knew they would brighten up and make our 112-year-old building stand out,” Larry Herrera shared.

The elk holds deep symbolism for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, which adopted it as their mascot in 1868. “An elk is quick on its feet, strong, and has keen perception,” Jane Herrera explained. “We strive to mirror those traits—by being quick to help our community, strong in our beliefs, and perceptive to the needs around us.”

A dedicated Elks member, Larry Herrera has held several leadership roles during his time with the organization. He previously served as Exalted Ruler (President) at the Englewood, Colorado Elks Lodge and currently serves at the Rocky Ford Lodge as the Loyal Knight, responsible for enforcing lodge rules and maintaining structure. He has also served as Lecturing Knight, promoting friendship and hospitality among members. Jane Herrera has been the Rocky Ford Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler and chaired every leadership committee.

Beyond their symbolic additions, the Rocky Ford Elks continue to make a tangible impact in the community. Over the past three years, the lodge has donated approximately $20,000 annually in cash and scholarships and contributed over 3,600 volunteer hours. Recent contributions include donations to Sage Food Services, the Rocky Ford Swimming Pool, local cheerleading teams, and the Pioneer Nursing Home. The lodge also sponsors major community events, including the annual Halloween Trunk-or-Treat and the Kids’ Christmas Party, with over $4,000 dedicated to these efforts.

“These statues are more than art—they’re a reflection of our commitment to the values we uphold and the community we serve,” Larry Herrera said.
