Two Semi-Truck Crash Sparks Fire, Closes I-70 in Adams County, Colorado — Eastbound Lanes Reopened


Description: Two semi-trucks crashed on I-70 near E-470 in Adams County, Colorado, causing one to erupt in flames and shutting down the interstate. Eastbound lanes and one westbound lane have reopened as crews continue cleanup.

Two Semi Crash, One Erupts into Flames

I-70 is closed in both directions

(Adams County, Colorado) - Earlier this morning at approximately 8:26 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a crash involving two semi trucks on Interstate 70 near milepost 289, west of E-470. One of the tractor-trailers became fully engulfed in flames, shutting down traffic in both directions of I-70. All eastbound lanes and one westbound lane have been reopened.

South Metro Fire Department, CDOT, Colorado State Patrol HAZMAT and other law enforcement agencies responded to assist with the scene and road closure. 

One of the semis was a 2026 Peterbilt hauling a trailer, and the other was a 2020 Volvo also hauling a trailer; both were traveling westbound on I-70. Both Drivers of the semi reported no injuries. 

Initial reports indicate that the Volvo rear-ended the trailer being hauled by the Peterbilt, with the Volvo and trailer coming to rest in the median. This caused the Volvo and its trailer to become fully engulfed in flames. The trailer then tipped over onto its side into the left lane of westbound Interstate 70. The trailer was carrying plastic cargo, which spilled onto the roadway, spreading the fire onto the roadway and the grassy median. 

The crash is being investigated by the Colorado State Patrol. The Driver of the Volvo semi was charged with Careless Driving.  

The Fire Department contained the fire at approximately 09:25 am. Two heavy tows were called to the scene to help with the semi recovery. CDOT has heavy equipment in place for the cleanup and detour. 

The eastbound lanes are open, and the right westbound lane was reopened at 12:02 pm. The left lane will remain shut down for an unknown period of time.
