Fire Crews Battle Major Structure Fire at 6th Street and Walnut Avenue
Tonight at approximately 5:50 pm we were paged out to a structure fire at 6th Street and Walnut Avenue.

Upon arrival we found a 2 story multi-family dwelling with the second floor with rolling flames out the windows along the Walnut Avenue side of the residence.

We immediately began initial attack exterior while sending an interior fire crew for search and suppression. No one was determined to be inside the building.

Mutual aid was requested from Manzanola Volunteer Fire Department and La Junta Fire Department. Fire crews worked diligently to suppress the fire and protect adjacent homes.
Otero County Sheriff’s office, and Rocky Ford Police Department assisted with crowd and traffic control.

The fire was extinguished and overhaul operations completed.
There was a dog found in the first floor alive and placed outside for observation.

No injuries reported. Damage to the residence is significant. Cause of fire undetermined and remains under investigation.

All fire crews cleared scene at approximately 8:30pm.
