Mabel Sarah (Weaver) Hansen was born on May 23, 1937, to Samuel J. and Viola (Keane) Weaver, at home on their ranch outside of Moffat. She passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 10, 2026, in La Junta, at the age of 88.

Mabel was raised on her family’s ranch outside of Moffat, where she learned the value of hard work, determination, and family. She attended Moffat schools and graduated in 1955. During her senior year, she proudly drove the school bus, a responsibility that reflected her independence and strong work ethic from an early age. She later attended Adams State University, where she met the love of her life, Bert Hansen. Family members often fondly recalled the story of how Bert first came to her rescue after she fell asleep in class and caught her as she fell out of her chair in class. He caught her before she hit the floor. The two were united in marriage in April 3, 1958 and built a life centered on family and hard work while raising their three children together.

Mabel devoted many years to caring for her home and family while also serving her community in numerous ways. She worked as a school bus driver, substitute teacher, and caregiver for her mother. Alongside Bert, she helped operate Adams Wrecking and later became a successful real estate broker, eventually founding Hansen Realty. Through dedication, perseverance, and a keen business sense, Mabel earned the respect of colleagues and community members alike. She served for several years as president of the Arkansas Valley Association of Realtors and was admired for her professionalism, determination, and willingness to help others.

Mabel and Bert shared many passions throughout their marriage, including photography. Together they built a darkroom in their home and operated a professional photography business. They also enjoyed ranching and worked side by side in their brisket cattle business which they brought cattle from high-altitude all-over Colorado with congestive heart failure to Las Animas so that they would have a higher chance of living and the majority of the cows survived. Mabel did most of the driving early on and went all over Colorado. No matter the endeavor, Mabel approached life with determination and purpose as evidenced by relearning to walk after breaking her hip on January 12, 2026. She did her rehabilitation at the Bent County HealthCare Center. They provided her with fabulous care and wonderful food and she really enjoyed her time there.

Mabel is survived by her children, Doris (Mark) Prokop of Los Alamos, New Mexico, James Hansen of Las Animas, Colorado, and Carl (Joyce) Hansen of Superior, Nebraska; seven grandchildren, Chris Baumgart (Melissa), Robin Mauck (Jason), Alex Prokop (Rachel), Danielle Prokop (Justin Garcia), Shanna Mitchell (Nathan), Derrick Hansen and Dustin Hansen and thirteen great grandchildren; other relatives; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bert Hansen; daughters-in-law, Wendy Hansen and Connie Hansen; brothers, William (Jackie) Weaver, John (Elva) Weaver, and Richard (Carol) Weaver; and grandson, Ray Walters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Funeral & Cremation, P.O. Box 431, Las Animas, Colorado 81054.
