James "Jim" Allen Brittain, 90, of Las Animas, Colorado, passed away peacefully at his home on July 17, 2026.

Jim was born on July 14, 1936, in McLouth, Kansas, to Jim and Elsie (Boydston) Brittain. Although he was an only child, he was surrounded by many cousins and lifelong friends, making for a happy and active childhood.

Following his graduation from McLouth High School, Jim married Mildred "Midge" Merritt on June 6, 1954. Together they were blessed with four daughters: Susan (Mike) Rush, Karen (Larry) Greer, Rhonda (Bob) Berry, and Jami Champagne.

Jim's work ethic and dedication were evident throughout his career. He began his professional life as a telegraph operator for the railroad before embarking on a distinguished 35-year career with the Colorado Department of Corrections. Starting as a correctional officer, Jim continued his education, earning college degrees that helped him advance through the ranks to become a warden. He later oversaw the planning and construction of several correctional facilities across Colorado. His accomplishments included remodeling the Colorado State Penitentiary, commonly known as "Old Max," building and opening the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility, completing and opening the Limon Correctional Facility following the 1990 tornado, and overseeing the construction and opening of the Bent County Correctional Facility.

While working in Limon, Jim met Wanda Bandy Darling, who would become the love of his later years. The two were married in Kansas on May 19, 1993, and shared more than 33 wonderful years together. Through their marriage, Jim welcomed Wanda's children, Doug (Vonnie) Darling and Sandy (Rick) Cleveland-Darling, along with five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren into his family.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Wanda; his daughters, Susan (Mike) Rush, Karen (Larry) Greer, Rhonda (Bob) Berry, and Jami Champagne; Wanda's children and their families, Doug (Vonnie) Darling and Sandy (Rick) Cleveland-Darling; ten grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elsie, who passed away when Jim was just 12 years old; his father, Jim; his beloved grandfather, whom he deeply admired; his grandmother; several aunts and uncles; and his favorite cousin, Chuck Miller, and Chuck's wife, Jo.

Per Jim’s request, cremation will take place and no formal services will be held.
