La Junta Firefighters Battle Intense East 7th Street House Fire

Accidental House Fire on East 7th Street Contained by Fire Crews, Residents Displaced

At approx 535pm today, a reported structure was paged out in the 400 blk of E 7th. Upon arrival of first units, heavy fire was seen coming out of the front windows and door of the front porch.

Heavy smoke was coming out of the back of the house. Crews were advised that all parties were out of the house.

The occupants were assisted out of and away from the house by two bystanders who came up on the scene prior to the arrival of the fire department.

Eng 1 crew started advancing attack hoselines to the front and rear of the single story house.

An aggressive fire attack started from the yard and then transitioned to an interior attack. While attacking the fire inside the interior crew located a dog inside a back bedroom in the heavy smoke and exteme heat. Crews rescued the dog and took it outside and gave it oxygen and tried to revive the dog but unfortunately the dog died on scene from the heavy smoke and heat inside.

Once the fire was knocked down and under control crews began salvage and overhaul and vented the roof as well to get rid of all the smoke.

They LJPD and OCSO was on scene assisting with traffic control.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the parties from the house and the La Junta KOA offered assistance for a place to stay for the night for the two occupants.

The cause of the fire was ruled accidental from a mishap of an electrical device.

City of LJ Electric and Black Hills Energy were called to secure the utilities.

All units cleared the scene and returned to service.
