Even a “Dusting” of Snow Can Be Dangerous

Trooper avoids a head-on crash

(COLO) - While much of this winter season has been mild, March can still bring sudden snowstorms to Colorado. Even light snow or a thin dusting can create deadly driving conditions.

On January 25, 2026, at 3:45 p.m, a near miss on Highway 85 in Adams County was captured on a cruiser dashcam video. A Colorado State Trooper narrowly avoided a head-on collision when a Ford pickup truck lost control on a lightly snow-dusted roadway. The pickup was traveling too fast for the conditions, slid through the median, struck a traffic sign, and entered oncoming traffic before continuing through the intersection.

The trooper had just begun moving through the intersection on a green light when the out-of-control vehicle crossed into his path. This trooper avoided a collision, then turned around to respond and assist at the crash scene. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. This incident serves as a reminder that even a dusting of snow can lead to dangerous and potentially deadly situations.

The Colorado State Patrol urges all motorists to adjust their driving as soon as winter weather begins. Drivers often underestimate how dangerous light snow can be. A small amount of moisture combined with dropping temperatures can quickly create slick, icy roadways. When the first snowflakes begin to fall, motorists should immediately reduce speed, increase following distance, and allow extra time and space to stop at intersections. All-wheel- and four-wheel-drive vehicles may improve traction, but they do not reduce stopping distance on snow and ice.

Slow down, increase your following distance, and plan ahead to ensure you arrive safely, no matter what conditions Colorado brings for the remainder of winter.
