Colorado Bureau of Investigation Leads Investigation After Discovery of Human Remains in Costilla County
March 26, 2026 – CBI – Costilla County, CO –The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been requested by the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office to take the lead in an investigation after human remains were discovered earlier this week.
On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, a reporting party (RP) who was hiking in the Sangre De Cristo Ranches area near Bruce Road in Costilla County located what they believed to be human remains. The RP immediately reported the finding to the Costilla County Sheriff's Office, who in turn notified the CBI.
CBI Agents responded to the scene and met with the Sheriff's Office and the reporting party. The RP showed the Agents where the remains were located, and the Agents determined the skeletal remains were human.
The Colorado State Patrol secured the area overnight, and an extensive search was conducted the following day, involving members of the CBI, the 12th Judicial District Attorney's Office, the Costilla County Coroner and K9 teams.
The remains have not been identified by the Costilla County Coroner at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
