GOVERNOR POLIS AND CITY OF ROCKY FORD PROCLAIM AUGUST 16, 2025, AS ROCKY FORD WATERMELON DAY

Rocky Ford, CO The City of Rocky Ford has officially proclaimed August 16, 2025, as Rocky Ford Watermelon Day, celebrating one of the community’s most well-known and cherished agricultural exports. This recognition underscores the city’s commitment to supporting and intentionally promoting the Rocky Ford watermelon as a symbol of local pride and economic vitality.

Through collaboration between city leadership, community partners, and state officials, Governor Jared Polis has also proclaimed August 16, 2025, as Rocky Ford Watermelon Day across the entire State of Colorado. This statewide recognition elevates the legacy of Rocky Ford watermelons and the agricultural community that makes them possible.

At the Tuesday, August 12th Council meeting, Both proclamations were presented to Sally Cope of the Arkansas Valley Fair Board in honor of the Board’s dedication to organizing the Arkansas Valley Fair and keeping a tradition alive that has now thrived for 148 years.

“Rocky Ford Watermelon Day is more than just a local celebration – it’s a statement about who we are as a community. Don’t forget, we’re also the home of the Rocky Ford High School Meloneer mascot,” said Rocky Ford Mayor Duane Gurule. “Our melons are known far beyond our city limits, and this recognition at both the city and state level affirms the importance of preserving and promoting our rural, agricultural heritage.”

The Arkansas Valley Fair is taking place Sunday, August 10th through Sunday, August 17th, and Rocky Ford Watermelon Day festivities will take place Saturday, August 16, 2025, featuring parades, entertainment, agricultural showcases, and, of course, plenty of famous Rocky Ford watermelon.
