Human Remains Found in Wild Horse Mesa, Costilla County — CBI Investigating


Description: The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Twelfth Judicial District Attorney’s Office have confirmed the discovery of human remains in the Wild Horse Mesa community of Costilla County on August 18, 2025. Investigators responded to the property after a citizen reported the find via email. Search and recovery efforts, assisted by K9 units, are ongoing. The identity of the deceased has not yet been determined, and the investigation remains active. Authorities are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death and will release more information as it becomes available.

HUMAN REMAINS DISCOVERED IN WILD HORSE MESA 

August 21, 2025 – CBI –  Costilla County, CO – The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is issuing the following news release on behalf of the Twelfth Judicial District Attorney's Office.  On August 18, 2025, the District Attorney’s Office responded to a citizen email reporting the discovery of human remains on his property located in the Wild Horse Mesa community in Costilla County.

The following day, investigators with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (“the CBI”) and the District Attorney’s Office responded to the remote location in Costilla County and confirmed the presence of remains.

The CBI utilized K9 resources to aid in the search and recovery efforts.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. The victim has not been identified at this time.

Efforts are underway to determine the identity of the deceased individual and the circumstances surrounding their death.

Further information will be released as it becomes available. The District Attorney’s Office continues to encourage citizens of Costilla County to bring their concerns to the District Attorney’s Office.
