Fall Production at Picketwire
Lee Blessing’s play A Walk In The Woods tells the tale of a series of meetings between two diplomat-negotiators, American and Russian over four seasons while they take a walk through the woods. This play staring Jeffrey Reed and Demian Ryder was a Pulitzer Prize runner up and is Picketwire Players’ fall production.
In the play, the two characters have clearly different agendas. The veteran Russian tries to forge a human connection, since he expects very little will get accomplished in the way of substantive political change. The younger American believes they should buckle down and do some real negotiating. But how much negotiating can be accomplished while the two men get to know each other. Is it a negotiation or a stall tactic to figure out the best Willie Nelson song or which country makes the best suits? There is plenty of witty dialogue, full of humor and fun as each man seeks to find an advantage for his own country.
The overarching theme running throughout A Walk in the Woods is the interplay and contrasts between wilderness and civilization. Is the purity and calm one finds in nature comparable to the nature of man? That is what brings the two men back to the woods each season to try to accomplish and, ultimately, come to an agreement.
