Colorado State Patrol Arrests Impaired Wrong-Way Driver on I-25
Dashcam footage reveals a life-threatening situation
(Colorado) - On August 10, 2025, at approximately 7:06 p.m., a Colorado State Patrol trooper successfully ended an impaired, wrong-way driving incident involving an erratic driver on Interstate 25 north of Fort Collins.
A concerned citizen called Colorado State Patrol dispatch to report a black Mercedes driving northbound on Interstate 25 in a reckless manner near milepost 278, just north of Fort Collins. The witness reported the vehicle was traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph and nearly struck her car while passing.
The situation escalated when the driver of the Mercedes stopped in the far left lane, turned around using the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane and the left lane, and then resumed traveling in the wrong direction. The driver of the Mercedes was headed south in the northbound lanes of I-25, driving directly into oncoming traffic. The same witness, who had already narrowly avoided a collision once, found herself facing this same driver again. The driver of the Mercedes then illegally used an emergency turn-around and entered I-25 traveling southbound in the southbound lanes at high speed.
Colorado State Trooper Colton Bogart was patrolling nearby and spoke with the witness via phone. During the call, he received a description of the vehicle. Moments later, Trooper Bogart spotted the Mercedes, and his patrol cruiser’s radar clocked the Mercedes traveling 102 mph on southbound I-25 near milepost 267. When Trooper Bogart attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over; instead, the driver swerved across all lanes and made a dangerous turnaround in the fast far left and HOV lanes, again.
Trooper Bogart’s dash camera footage captured the Mercedes driving the wrong direction on southbound I-25 and coming directly toward him. The driver forced Trooper Bogart to brake hard and take evasive action to avoid a head-on crash. The driver then continued northbound in the southbound lanes, once again putting countless motorists at risk.
The Mercedes crossed all lanes of oncoming traffic and exited I-25 to Highway 392, where Trooper Bogart pursued. The vehicle briefly headed west, then abruptly turned back east before pulling into a fast-food restaurant parking lot. There, Trooper Bogart blocked the car, ordered the driver out of the vehicle, and placed the driver under arrest without further incident.
Thanks to the vigilance of the reporting witness and the actions of Trooper Bogart, this driver was stopped before causing what could have been a catastrophic tragedy.
The driver, 36 year old Nelson Oldham, was arrested on the following charges:
-
Vehicular Eluding Created a Substantial Risk of Bodily Injury by Operating a Vehicle in a Reckless Manner
-
Drove Vehicle While Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs or Both
-
Speeding (25-39 MPH Over the Maximum 75MPH Limit)
-
Reckless Endangerment
-
Changed Lanes When Unsafe
-
Drove Vehicle on Wrong Side of Divided Highway
The Colorado State Patrol reminds drivers that impaired driving is one of the leading causes of fatal and serious injury crashes in Colorado. Wrong-way crashes are particularly deadly, leaving other drivers with little to no time to react. Every DUI is preventable; plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or use public transportation or rideshare services.
Arrests and charges are merely accusations until and unless a suspect is convicted of a crime. All suspects and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
