Otero County Responds to Safeway Closure Announcement

Otero County has been notified by Albertsons Companies of the planned permanent closure of the La Junta Safeway.

The closure will directly impact current staff members as well as the broader community that depends on the store as a key grocery option.

Commissioner Rob Oquist, Chair of the Otero County Board of Commissioners, expressed the Board’s concern and commitment:
"We are deeply concerned for the employees whose jobs are affected and for the families in our community who will feel the loss of this important grocery option. We recognize not only the economic impact of this closure, but also the personal, emotional, and health challenges it creates for residents of La Junta and Otero County.

Safeway has served our region for decades, and its absence will be felt by many. The County stands ready to work with city, county, state, and federal partners to find any solutions possible that support both the workforce and the community’s access to food and essential goods."

The County is actively exploring potential solutions, including connecting displaced workers with employment resources and engaging with economic development partners to attract new opportunities.

While the closure presents challenges, Otero County remains committed to supporting its residents, businesses, and workforce during this transition.
